Art deco has its origins in France in the 1920's, more particularly in Paris.  The style flourished and influenced all areas of design, architecture being the most visible but also in interior design, jewellery, fashion, painting and more.  It was a purely decorative design movement, and as such the art still shines through.

The designs were lavish and decorative and the movement seems to have been a reaction to the austerity in the post war period of the 20's.  The materials used included both new materials such as bakerlite and aluminium as well as exotic animal skins and crystal.

Art deco declined in popularity with the coming of World War 2 but enjoyed a revival in the late 60's and had a profound influence on graphic design and later artistic movements such as pop art.
