Who are Anglada?
Maria Angeles Anglada hails from Zaragoza, Spain. These pieces are created in a workshop where Angeles and her assistants design, hand make and hand paint each figure. This handcraft requires six days for the completion of each figure.
The process and materials used:
Once Angeles has designed on paper, she then creates a clay prototype of the sculpture. Once she is satisfied, she passes to the stage of making the final version of the sculpture. For this she uses a mineral called Calcite. This is an ornamental stone used by ancient cultures to shape and create their sculptures for thousands of years. In fact the ancient Egyptians used it for many of their decorative artworks. The famed Sphinx is made of this ornamental stone. The Calcite or ornamental stone is extracted from a mine in the town of Belchite. This ornamental stone and its exclusive characteristics give each reproduction of the original artwork or statuette its original appearance. This is because of the degree of hardness of the stone itself. Angeles also chooses two types of bases, one of marble and the other of Calcite as well. This last option allows Angeles to impress her creativity even on the base itself.
Once the final version of the sculpture is ready, Angeles personally hand paints her creation. The paint texture and mixture, is the creation of Angeles.
